SA: Is there Type 1 Diabetes in your family?

Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre

If you have a relative with type 1 diabetes we need your help in developing a type 1 diabetes vaccine.

A simple test will determine whether you have a predisposition to type 1 diabetes. If you are at a high risk of developing type 1 diabetes the trial treatment may prevent you from developing the condition. Your participation could play a crucial role in the prevention of type 1 diabetes in your children or grandchildren and aid in the development of a type 1 diabetes vaccine.

    To be eligible you must:
  • be between the ages of 4 and 30
  • have a 1st degree relative (mother, father, brother, sister) or 2nd degree relative (grandparent, uncle, aunt, half brother, half sister) with type 1 diabetes.

All medical care, examinations, tests and the study medication are provided free of charge, and travel expenses will be reimbursed.

The trial is being conducted by medically qualified professionals, and has received ethics committee approval from the Children, Youth & Women's HealthService Human Research Ethics Committees. If you choose to participate, your participation will not interfere with your relationship with your regular Doctor. Please note the call centre will be closed for the Christmas break until Jan 11th.
